Marta Arpini
Marta Arpini is een uit Italië afkomstige singer-songwriter die woonachtig is in Amsterdam. Dribbelend tussen jazz, dromerige indiepop en folk verovert ze langzaam maar zeker de harten van Nederlandse muziekliefhebbers. De afgelopen jaren deed ze dit in een van van haar vele verschijningen: van jazz-pop quintet Forest Light en indierockband tiigre tot haar samenwerking met gitarist Gonçalo Neto.
In 2019 brengt Marta haar debuutalbum Forest Light uit. Het album levert haar direct een Edison Jazz/World nominatie op. Vervolgens speelt Marta met haar gelijknamige band (Forest Light) een reeks shows op een aantal prestigieuze festivals.
Op haar nieuwe album I Am A Gem geeft Marta Arpini zichzelf volledige vrijheid. Het album is een duidelijke melting pot van alle projecten waar ze tot nu toe aan gewerkt heeft: een combinatie van indie folk en pop met duidelijke wortels in jazz. “Writing, recording and producing this album was like finally giving myself a freedom — stylistic, mental — that I didn’t really know what to do with, until last year; it was like welcoming all (or a big part) of the things I like in music and I am, putting them together under the same roof and tell them: now you live here, this is your house”.
Marta laat zich tijdens het schrijven van haar album inspireren door legendarische en onconventionele songwriters als Andy Shauf, Elliot Smith, Adrianne Lenker en Rufus Wainwright maar ook door jazz en instrumentale muziek van artiesten als Duke Ellington, Brad Mehldau en Skúli Sverrisson.
Met een ‘music first’ aanpak gaat Marta aan de slag om uiteindelijk met producer Mark Schilders en haar band het album vorm te geven in de studio. “The music came first, on the guitar, at the piano, on Logic, and then the lyrics. And so this album is about many things: love, intimacy, anxiety and going to dark places, growing old, being a work in progress, acceptance, distance, togetherness, dream activity, feminism and emancipation… again, it’s like little windows opening for a minute on a hidden thought, a mood, an intense feeling, and once you put all the windows together there you see it, a heart, many-sided and wide open”
